Density Altitude is pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature. On hot summer days, air becomes less dense, reducing wing lift, propeller thrust, and engine horsepower. A runway at 2,000 feet elevation on a 35°C (95°F) day can easily have an effective density altitude of over 5,000 feet, substantially lengthening takeoff roll and degrading climb performance.
